Headphones

Another upcycling projectwe go one step further

Here you can see a pair of unbranded and unnamed headphones that we were able to acquire at auction. The mixture of chrome and brass simply convinced us to create something new and beautiful! In contrast to our Membra project (to the article) we have now decided on new headphone speakers from Monacor. We wanted to install the great Monacor SP-39, because these are the only speakers for headphones that appeared to fit the specifications. A call to all HiFi  enthusiasts follows:
if you know better equipment, we would be grateful for tips! However, the internal dimensions of the old headphones are limited to a diameter of 40 mm.

Dismantlingand cleaning

First, we had to dismantle the 90-year-old headphones. The ear cups are only clicked in. The two screws hold the inside and should only be removed after the top attachment has been removed.

Cleaningand polishing

When you are dealing with products and especially with technical devices that are almost 100 years old, then a single cloth is nowhere near enough for cleaning. As a result, we first cleaned the metal with vinegar cleaner and tackled the leather with soft soap. We made the polishing work with chrome plaster, available from the auto accessories division.

You can see the result here on the picture using the earpieces. Left: before - right: after

You can also see ear cups and holding forks shown. Those who do too much polishing work get brass headphones as a result.

Material installation

Here we used the Monacor SP-39. These were fitted with pure sheep's wool. Summer cables “The Square” (Made in Germany) are used as cables. Amphenol connectors were of course also used. We already made the transition from the stereo signal to the individual earpieces, this time with colored shrink tubing. The next time it could be a black tube or even (when ordering) your preferred color.

The resultis convincing

The headphones sound really great. The equipment, the cables, the plug and, last but not least, the good local sheep wool ensure a crystal clear sound! A headphone upcycling, which was really worth it!

Through precise refurbishment, we were able to convert another model ready for use.

Note: the stylish headphones are a prototype for a series that will be launched on the market soon. Be curious!
